Composite chart: the astrology of your relationship
A composite chart merges two birth charts into one: the chart of your relationship itself. What this third entity reveals about a couple, beyond synastry.

What is a couple's composite chart?
When two people meet, they do not simply add their characters together. Something new is born between them, a dynamic of its own that neither carries alone. The composite chart is the tool relational astrology uses to read that entity precisely, and it often explains why a relationship has its own unmistakable color.
How a composite chart is built
The principle is simple, and that is what makes it so telling. You take each planet from both charts and calculate the midpoint between the two positions. The composite Sun sits halfway between your two Suns, the composite Moon between your two Moons, and so on for every planet and angle.
The result is not an average of your personalities: it is an entirely new chart, with its own aspects, houses, and emphasis. It reads like any birth chart, except that it speaks of neither you nor the other person, but of that invisible third being you form together.
Composite chart vs synastry: what is the difference?
This is the question that always comes up, and the distinction matters. Synastry keeps your two charts separate and watches how your planets speak to each other: their Mars on your Venus, their Moon opposite your Sun. It lights up attraction, friction, and what each person stirs in the other.
The composite chart no longer looks at two people face to face: it looks at the couple as a unit. It answers a different question. Not "what draws me to this person," but "what is this relationship made of, what has it come to live, where does it feel at home." In my practice I always read both: synastry for the people, the composite for the bond. One without the other gives an incomplete picture.
What the composite Sun, Moon, and Ascendant reveal
Three points already give the essential climate of a relationship.
The composite Sun shows the reason the couple exists, what it organizes itself around and what makes it shine. Its house reveals the area of life the relationship activates: home, creativity, travel, shared work. The composite Moon describes the emotional climate, how the couple feels safe, whether it breathes ease or tension. It is often the key to "we feel good together," or to its opposite. The composite Ascendant, finally, describes the image the couple projects outward, how others perceive it, sometimes very different from what it lives in private.
Composite Venus and Mars: tenderness and tension in the bond
Venus and Mars tell the affectionate and physical life of the relationship. Composite Venus lights up shared tenderness, the pleasure of being together, common values; well aspected, it gives a relationship that knows how to be good to itself. Composite Mars describes drive and desire, but also how the couple handles conflict: some composites carry a combative Mars that dramatizes the smallest spark, others a Mars that avoids confrontation and lets things fester.
To understand what each person brings to that chemistry, knowing how you love and how you commit sheds a great deal of light on a couple's Venus and Mars.
The trap to avoid: an entity, not an average
Here is the most common mistake. People assume two gentle personalities must produce a gentle relationship. That is not what the composite shows. Two peaceful temperaments can produce a composite with a dominant Mars and tense aspects: together, they awaken an intensity neither knows alone. The reverse happens too: two difficult characters who, joined, find an unexpected calm.
That is the whole point of the composite reading: it reveals the emergent temperament of the bond, the one you cannot deduce from the sum of the two. It is often there that the explanation hides for a couple that "does not understand itself."
Composite chart and the Davison chart
To be precise, there is a neighboring technique not to be confused with it. The Davison chart does not use the midpoints of positions, but the midpoint in time and space: you calculate the date, time, and place halfway between the two births, then cast a real chart for that moment. The composite is a symbolic construction, the Davison a real chart for an in-between instant. Both describe the relationship; many astrologers compare them to refine the reading.
Reading the composite at the right moment
The composite chart is precious, provided you read it in its rightful place: after the two individual charts and synastry, never instead of them. It does not say whether a relationship "will last," it says what it is made of and what it asks for in order to flourish. It is a map, not a verdict.
If you want to understand in depth the relationship you form together, I study both of your charts, your synastry, and your composite chart in a couple compatibility reading, to light up what binds you, what tests you, and what your bond has come to help you grow.
Frequently asked questions
What is a composite chart?
It is a single birth chart calculated from the midpoints between two people's planets. It describes neither partner, but the relationship itself, as a third entity with its own temperament, strengths, and tensions.
What is the difference between a composite chart and synastry?
Synastry compares two separate charts and looks at how their planets interact. A composite chart merges the two into one: it no longer shows two people meeting, but the couple as such. The two readings complete each other.
Do you need birth times for a composite chart?
Ideally, yes. Without reliable birth times, the composite Ascendant and the Moon's position become uncertain, which distorts part of the reading. The planets stay interpretable, but a fine reading of the relationship's climate needs accurate times.
